As you walk through the building, notice whether temperatures change significantly from one area to another. Listen for unusual HVAC noises and look for dirty vents, blocked air returns, moisture, or excessive dust near ventilation systems.

Look for damaged guards, loose barriers, leaking fluids, unusual vibration, worn cords, missing signage, or items stored too close to equipment. Make sure employees can move safely around each machine and that maintenance teams have enough room to access it when needed.

Look around ceilings, walls, restrooms, break rooms, utility areas, floor drains, and exterior doors for stains, standing water, damp materials, musty odors, or peeling paint. Check beneath sinks and near equipment that uses water as part of the production process.

Emergency routes should always be clearly marked, well lit, and free from stored materials or equipment. During your walkthrough, follow the routes employees would take during an emergency rather than simply looking at the exit doors from a distance.
Check that:
- Exit signs are visible and working.
- Doors open properly.
- Hallways and routes are unobstructed.
- Fire extinguishers and other safety equipment are accessible.
- Emergency maps and instructions are current.

7. Loading Docks and Exterior Areas
The outside of a manufacturing facility directly affects what happens inside. Loading docks, parking lots, sidewalks, drainage systems, roofs, and exterior entrances all support the safe movement of employees, vehicles, equipment, and materials.
Look for pavement damage, poor drainage, standing water, damaged dock equipment, faded markings, loose handrails, exterior lighting problems, and debris near entrances.
Proper entrance matting also deserves attention. Mats should be the right size for the space, remain flat against the floor, and be regularly cleaned or replaced. Effective matting can help capture dirt and moisture before it is tracked into production and employee areas.
Seasonal conditions create different concerns, so exterior areas should be reviewed throughout the year—not only after a storm or weather-related incident.
